For a long time getting advice for someone who wanted life
assurance and also happened to be gay was never really a problem.
However the stance taken by a lot of the Life Assurance Companies
was a very different story.
There were the demands for HIV tests and loaded life assurance
premiums that were based on a heightened alarmist sense of
risk, which wasn't treating an individual as an individual,
but lumping every gay individual together.
A lot of the questions that were asked were very intrusive
and could be seen as a little insulting to someone who may
or may not be gay. There was suspiscion if you were a certain
age and single, it was then assumed you may be gay and as
such demands were made.
Fortunately the Association of British Insurers have reviewed
their guidelines and this will result in a much fairer assessment
for gay men that wish to take out Life Assurance.
Naturally the Life assurance questions have been modified
to encompass a more all round view of an individuals lifestyle,
and not concentrate on an individuals sexuality.
On large amounts of cover they may ask for a HIV test.
You can apply for Life Assurance with a partner if you wish
and it will be treated in a fair and responsible manner as
a heterosexual couples application would be.
The same is also true not just for personal Life Assurance
applications but also for corporate applications as well.
Over the years there has been a 'fear' of Life Assurance
for gay men and women, as it was perceived by many of my clients
as something that was necessary, but wasn't very welcoming
towards them.
Well after such a long time the scales have balanced themselves
a bit more.
